According to Chandler, several NGOs, including the Mellowswan Foundation Africa-Tanzania have plans to save remaining forests in the region, while promoting reforestation, sustainable agriculture and wildlife conservation. The program will plant more than 10 million new seedlings just in the Kilimanjaro ecosystem.

A new report by the United Nations Environment Programme says that protecting East Africa’s mountain ecosystems would safeguard the region’s $7 billion tourism industry, not to mention the lives of millions of people and iconic endangered species.

“Across the continent, the damage done to these ecosystems is depriving people of the basic building blocks of life,” said Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment agency.

He said Mt. Kilimanjaro was an example of how climate change was severely damaging Africa’s mountains and the people who depend on them. Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest in Africa, contributes to more than a third of Tanzania’s revenue from tourism but is facing several problems, ranging from shrinking glaciers to rampant wild fires. As climate change intensifies, it is essential that governments act swiftly to prevent more harm and more downward momentum. The report urges Tanzania to protect the mountain’s water catchment area by reforestation, investing in early warning systems and making climate adaptation a top priority.

Loss of forests isn’t the only problem in East Africa. Tanzania may have lost half its elephant population since 2007. It could be wiped out entirely in just seven years. Kenya’s wildlife also is under assault like never before. Adding to the crisis, there has been loss of wildlife habitat and biodiversity as a result of fragmentation and loss of critical ecosystem linkages and over-exploitation of the natural habitats. This loss of habitat brings humans and wildlife into more and more conflict over food, water and space–which means more bloodshed.

Tanzania’s elephant population declined from an estimated 109,000 elephants in 2009 to around 70,000 in 2012. Around 30 elephants are killed for their ivory every day, almost 11,000 each year and rising. It’s estimated that more than 35,000 African elephants were killed for ivory in 2012. The number keeps rising.

A nonprofit organization in Tanzania hopes to reverse those trends with a comprehensive forest conservation, reforestation and community-engagement program.

The Mellowswan Foundation Africa-Tanzania will defend the greater Kilimanjaro ecosystem with more than 10 million new seedlings, community engagement, wildlife conservation strategies and more. They will educate local stakeholders about sustainable forestry, sustainable agriculture and wildlife management. Unlike past reforestation efforts in the region, it will focus on local needs and long-term sustainability. The seedlings are indigenous species that can help restore and protect the integrity of the ecosystem, while helping rural communities thrive as stewards of the land.

Unfortunately, forests across the region are retreating under the pressures of agriculture and communities that depend on firewood. Water supplies also are retreating.

Conservationists are demanding more efforts to protect endangered species now. In a letter published July 27, 2016 in the journal BioScience, 43 wildlife conservationists warn that elephants, lions, rhinos, gorillas and many other species will become extinct without urgent intervention, which must include habitat conservation, community engagement and more.

The silent epidemic is rapidly becoming the leading cause of death in the world. It’s being mismanaged on many levels. Innocent people around the world are paying the price.

Most of us know dementia as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. As we explain below, they are all part of the same disease spectrum. We explore some of the causes of the explosive epidemic and we offer advice to help you and your loved ones avoid contracting this deadly brain disease.

Dementia is vastly undiagnosed and misdiagnosed. Unfortunately, doctors are withholding millions of additional diagnoses, so we don’t know the actual extent of the epidemic. The mismanagement is an outrage.

So-called Alzheimer’s disease and closely related diseases are actually members of an aggressive family of neurodegenerative diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE). The operative word is “transmissible.” The TSE epidemic represents an environmental nightmare that threatens every mammal on Earth.

According to research from John Hopkins, Duke University, and Utah State University, caregivers of someone with dementia are six times more likely to develop the condition themselves.

TSEs include Alzheimer’s disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Parkinson’s disease, mad cow disease and chronic wasting disease in deer. TSE has been found in mink, moose, mice, sheep, cats, elephants, dolphins and many other species. Sea mammals are extremely vulnerable, but they aren’t being tested. Sick mammals on land and at sea are serving as “canaries in a coal mine.” Their sickness reflects an alarming epidemiological trend among humans. The same environmental contagion is responsible for the spike among all mammals. There is no species barrier.

TSEs are caused by a deadly protein called a prion (PREE-on). As such, TSEs also are referred to as prion disease. The critical factor is that prions are unstoppable. The pathogen spreads through the bodily fluids and cell tissue of its victims. Blood, saliva, mucas, milk, urine and feces carry deadly prions from victims. All tissue is infectious just because of the contact with the contaminated blood.

Prions are such a formidable threat that the U.S. government enacted the Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, which included a provision to halt research on prions in all but two laboratories. It classified prions as select agents that pose an extreme risk to food, water and health systems. Unfortunately, the Centers For Disease Control quietly took prions off the list about two years ago because the classification threatened to criminalize multi-billion dollar industries and many industry practices.

The good news is that many foods show promise in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. We will explain which ones are the most effective and analyze why they show promise. Leaders Want Help With Climate Mitigation, Resilience

Leading emitters of greenhouse gases should honor their financial commitment to enable vulnerable African countries to strengthen their resilience to impacts of climate change. Heads of state and government who met at an AU summit here stressed that the industrial north has an obligation to assist African countries adapting to climate change.

“Africa contributes less than 3 percent of total green house gases that cause climate change. This should be a justification for us to ask the developed world to contribute more towards bridging the funding bill,” said Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.

Global warming has wrought immense damage on Africa’s fragile ecosystems as well as physical and social infrastructure. Kikwete said that financing shortfalls, slow technological adoption and disjointed policies have undermined the fight against climate change in Africa.

“Addressing climate change requires massive financial resources and technological support never envisaged before. For example, addressing adaptation alone needs financial resources in the range of 7-15 billion U.S. dollars annually by 2020,” Kikwete told African leaders and diplomats.

The international community has been slow in honouring financial pledges to help African nations cope with climate induced vagaries. Kikwete warned that societies across Africa will suffer heavily in the absence of mitigation and adaptation programs.

“Scientific assessments indicate that Sub-Saharan Africa will suffer from climate induced disasters. There will be a 19 percent and 68 percent decrease in maize and beans yields respectively,” Kikwete said.

He added that African nations may lose 311 million U.S. dollars annually due to impacts of climate change on resource based economic sectors.

Political leaders in Africa have joined the civil society in lobbying for increased climate financing. The Committee of African heads of state and governments on climate change that is headed by President Kikwete has challenged big polluters to increase financial flows and technology required for climate change adaptation.

African countries have been unable to generate adequate financial resources to combat effects of climate change. Kikwete urged African leaders to lobby the international community to ensure climate financing is adequate and consistent.

“It is important to note that the green climate fund operational procedures have been completed. The developed world has an opportunity to honor what they promised,” said Kikwete.

He challenged governments to put policy and legislative frameworks in place to facilitate the absorption of climate funds. African leaders warned that a huge financing gap might derail low carbon growth in the continent. Dozens of political leaders, diplomats and policymakers agreed that Africa must unite in the push for increased climate financing.

“Our voice should be united on the need for deep and rules based emission reduction by all major emitters. Developed countries must scale up financing and technology transfer to boost response to climate change in the poor south,” said Kenyan Foreign Minister, Amina Mohammed.

Denver PR Firm Speaking Up Against Deforestation

Reforestation Can Help Mitigate Climate Change

Crossbow Communications, a Denver-based advertising and public relations agency, has volunteered its services to raise money for Sacred Seedlings, an international reforestation and forest conservation program also based in Colorado.

“Our partners in Tanzania have developed a plan with the forestry department to plant 10 million trees over the next five years at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro,” said Gary Chandler, president of Crossbow. “These trees will create jobs, preserve habitat for endangered species and help offset human contributions to climate change.”

As Chandler explained, some of the trees will be used to reforest degraded forests and deforested areas. Other species of trees will be grown to produce crops near villages and in towns and cities (coffee and cocoa, for example). Other trees will be placed near homes and buildings to protect them from the elements, reduce energy consumption, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions caused by energy demands. Sacred Seedlings also will fund several solar ovens for villagers to minimize the need to cut firewood for cooking. The company is developing similar programs around the world.

Tanzania also is one of the last strongholds for wildlife in Africa. The country known for the Serengeti National Park and other natural wonders is under siege by wildlife poachers. Last year, more than 10,000 elephants in Tanzania were slaughtered for their ivory. The strong demand for ivory in China and Thailand, for example, tempts locals in Tanzania and surrounding countries to kill elephants to feed their families. Unless economic interventions, such as job creation, succeed, the African elephant will be gone from the wild within the next decade. Rhinos and lions face the same fate.
